Snow Leopard Trust No one can ignore the enigmatic and captivating beauty of the majestic snow leopard.
In 1981, seven years after the snow leopard was placed on the endangered species list, Helen Freeman founded the Snow Leopard Trust to ensure the cat’s survival. Back then, Helen was Education Director at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA, and one of only a handful of people to have the opportunity to see this rare cat up close and personal. She immediately fell in love with snow leopards, and dedicated the rest of her life to them.
Helen understood that, while important, lists and laws are hard to enforce in the remote mountain regions of snow leopard range countries, and are largely ineffective without the support of the people who directly share the cat’s environment. She chartered a unique approach to snow leopard conservation based on considering the needs of local people. Today Helen’s organization, the Snow Leopard Trust, is the largest and oldest organization dedicated solely to protecting snow leopards, and has program in Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, India, Pakistan, and China.
